At Grape of the Art, we’re a indendent bottler from Stuttgart, brought together by a shared love for high-quality spirits. Our journey started with a passion for rum and whisky, but a blind tasting with some hidden Armagnacs opened our eyes to the complexity and charm of this unique brandy. Now, we travel to France multiple times each year, searching for exceptional, unaltered casks of Armagnac and Cognac to share with others who value these hidden gems.
Our latest discovery? A rare 1988 vintage single cask Armagnac from Domaine de Pellehaut [MORE INFO], aged for 35 years and bottled at a natural cask strength of 49.7%. This cask immediately stood out to us, and we’re thrilled to bring it to our community.
The Story of Pellehaut
Domaine de Pellehaut is located in the heart of the Ténarèze region, a historic estate with over 400 years of Armagnac production. Today, it’s run by brothers Mathieu and Martin Beraut, who combine traditional methods with a deep respect for the land. Their family vineyards span 250 hectares, with 15 hectares dedicated solely to Armagnac grapes like Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche.
The estate has a unique aging environment, with humid cellars that naturally slow the evaporation process, allowing their Armagnac to develop a remarkable balance and depth. This approach reflects the family’s philosophy of letting the spirit evolve on its own over time.
As Aurélie shared with us, “We decide by tasting each vintage and each barrel. Sometimes after 10 years, it’s delicious; other times, it needs more time, so we have to be patient.” This dedication to tradition and patience is what makes Domaine de Pellehaut’s Armagnac so special – and the 1988 vintage is a perfect example.
Our Cask Pick
Our 1988 Domaine de Pellehaut bottling spent 35 years in these unique cellars, developing layers of aroma and flavor that captivated us. Expect notes of dried fruits – apricots, quinces, cherries – and soft winter spices like cinnamon and dried orange peel. The palate is rich and round, with a touch of sultana sweetness and a long, elegant finish that captures Pellehaut’s pure, unaltered style.
This Armagnac is bottled directly from the cask, with no dilution or added sugars. It’s a true representation of Domaine de Pellehaut’s dedication to their craft and to keeping each vintage as authentic as possible.
